US internet advertising revenue reached $294.6 billion in 2025, up 13.9% in a year, and for the first time social media ($117.7 billion) brought in more than search ($114.2 billion), according to the IAB and PwC report published in April 2026 (IAB). That money is chasing the same customers you are.
Here is a first meeting I’ve had in many versions with US owners. A home services company in a big metro, a decent budget, four vendors. One sends a monthly SEO ranking report. One runs Facebook and reports a low cost per click. One built the website. One “does Google”. Every report is green. Revenue is flat, and when I ask which channel brought in last month’s best customers, the owner looks at the operations manager and says, “Probably Google?”
Nobody in that room is lazy. Nobody owns the plan, and that is the difference between buying marketing tasks and buying digital marketing services. This guide covers what a full service includes in 2026, goals and KPIs, the channel mix, budgets, who should deliver it and the first 90 days: the conversation we’d have before any proposal.
Key takeaways
- A digital marketing strategy is a set of numbers before it is a set of channels: revenue goal, customers needed, the most you can pay per customer, and the budget that follows.
- US benchmarks show the gap between channels: Google search leads averaged about $66.69 (LocaliQ 2026) while Facebook lead campaigns averaged about $27.66 (WordStream 2025). The cheaper lead is not always the cheaper customer.
- In-house is costly: the median US marketing manager earned $166,790 in May 2025 (BLS). Many growing businesses get better value from one senior consultant plus a lean team.
- Give a new plan about 90 days, with a clear stage for each step: meeting, audit, strategy, execution, then scaling and reporting.
What do digital marketing services include for US businesses in 2026?
A complete service has three layers. A foundation of strategy and measurement. Channels that bring people in: paid search, paid social, SEO and AI search. And the work that turns visitors into customers and customers into repeat buyers: landing pages, content, email and CRM. If a proposal only lists the middle layer, you are buying traffic, not growth.
| Part of the service | What it should cover | Who needs it most | First number to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy | Offer, audience, revenue goal, target cost per customer, budget split | Everyone, before spending | Target cost per acquisition |
| Tracking & analytics | GA4, Google Tag Manager, call tracking, CRM sales data, consent settings | Everyone, from day one | Tracked revenue vs. bank revenue |
| Paid search | Google Ads and Microsoft Ads: Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Local Services Ads | Businesses people already search for | Cost per qualified lead or ROAS |
| Paid social | Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube ads, creative testing, retargeting | New or visual products, B2B by job title | Lead-to-sale rate |
| SEO & AI search | Technical health, content, local SEO, being cited in AI answers | Anyone who wants demand without a cost per click | Organic leads, not rankings |
| Landing pages & CRO | Focused pages, short forms, checkout and booking tests | Anyone with traffic that doesn’t convert | Conversion rate by page |
| Email & CRM | Lead nurture, follow-up speed, repeat purchase flows | Long sales cycles, e-commerce | Revenue per contact |
What goes into a digital marketing strategy?
Five decisions, written down. Who you are selling to and what they search, watch and read. What the offer is and why it beats the competitor three results down. How much a customer is worth to you and how much you can pay to win one. Where the money goes, channel by channel, with a target for each. When you will review, cut or scale. A strategy that skips the third decision is a wish list, because without a target cost per customer nobody can tell you whether a campaign is working.
The US adds a layer most markets don’t have: you are really selling into 50 states. The US Hispanic population reached 70.1 million in July 2025, about 21% of the country (US Census Bureau), so for many local businesses a Spanish campaign with its own landing page belongs in the strategy, not in a “maybe later” list.
What does SEO and AI search optimization add in 2026?
SEO still brings customers without a cost per click, but where the click happens has changed. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults’ browsing in March 2025, about 18% of Google searches showed an AI summary. On those pages, users clicked a regular result on about 8% of visits, compared with about 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary on about 1% (Pew Research Center).
So a 2026 SEO service adds pages that answer real questions plainly, consistent business details across the web, published proof, and regular checks of how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity describe you. My SEO services page explains how I handle that.
Why do email and CRM belong in the same plan as your ads?
Because paid traffic is rented and customers are owned. Every lead you already paid for should get fast follow-up and a nurture sequence, and every buyer should get a reason to come back. For an international combat sports brand selling across the US, the UK and other regions, email produced just 2% of sales when I took over. Rewriting the flows from first purchase to repeat purchase doubled it to 4%, and fixing migration errors grew organic search from 20% to 35% of traffic. The full story is in the combat sports e-commerce case study.
How do you set goals and KPIs for digital marketing in the US?
Start from the business, not the platform. A goal like “more traffic” or “more followers” can be hit while the business shrinks. A goal like “40 new customers a month at no more than $250 each” can’t be faked.
How do you work out what you can afford to pay for a customer?
Take the gross profit from a customer’s first purchase (or, if they reliably come back, from their first year), then decide how much of it you are willing to spend to win them. If your close rate from lead to sale is 25%, your affordable cost per lead is a quarter of your affordable cost per customer. That one number sets every bid and budget that follows.
Which KPIs show whether digital marketing services are working?
Split your numbers into two groups. Diagnostic numbers such as impressions, clicks, click-through rate, rankings, open rates and followers explain why something is happening. Business numbers tell you whether it is working:
- Cost per qualified lead, where “qualified” is defined with your sales team, not by the form.
- Cost per acquisition, once sales are tracked back to the source.
- ROAS for e-commerce, judged against your margin.
- Lead-to-sale rate, which often reveals that the problem is follow-up, not marketing.
- Marketing cost as a share of revenue, month by month.
Your monthly report should lead with these.
How do you calculate ROI from digital marketing?
ROI = (gross profit from marketing − total marketing cost) ÷ total marketing cost. Total cost means ad spend plus fees, tools and staff time. Use gross profit, not revenue: $50,000 in sales on a 20% margin is $10,000 of profit, so a campaign that cost $12,000 lost money even though the revenue looks impressive.
Which digital marketing channel mix works for US businesses?
The best first channel is the one where your buyers already look. A roofer in Phoenix, a payroll software company in Austin and a Shopify store shipping nationwide need different plans, even with the same budget.
Where are US customers online in 2026?
Almost everywhere, which is why choosing matters. Google handled 85.19% of US searches in September 2026 and Bing 9.89% (StatCounter). DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report gives these figures for late 2025:
| Platform (US, late 2025) | Users or ad reach | Share of population |
|---|---|---|
| Internet users | 324 million | 93.1% |
| YouTube (ad reach) | 254 million | 73.0% |
| Facebook (ad reach) | 198 million | 56.8% |
| Instagram (ad reach) | 182 million | 52.3% |
| TikTok (ad reach, adults 18+) | 153 million | 55.7% of adults |
| Snapchat (ad reach) | 104 million | 29.8% |
| Pinterest (ad reach) | 96.9 million | 27.9% |
Source: DataReportal, Digital 2026: The United States of America. Ad reach comes from each platform’s ad tools and is not the same as active users. LinkedIn reports about 270 million registered US members, which is not comparable with active use.
Google Ads or Facebook ads: which brings cheaper leads in the US?
On paper, Facebook. WordStream’s 2025 US benchmarks put the median cost per lead for Facebook lead campaigns at $27.66 (WordStream), while LocaliQ’s 2026 search benchmarks put the average Google search lead at $66.69 (LocaliQ). The gap is wide in every industry both studies cover:
The catch: a search lead typed a need into Google, while a social lead tapped a pre-filled form between videos. If your sales team closes 20% of search leads and 5% of social leads, a $66 search lead costs about $330 per customer and a $27 social lead about $550. That is why I never choose channels from cost per lead alone; I wait until the CRM shows cost per customer. If you want the detail, see my Google Ads management and Facebook and Instagram ads pages.
Which mix works for local, B2B and e-commerce businesses?
- Local services (contractors, clinics, law firms): Google Search, Local Services Ads and a strong Google Business Profile first, then Facebook for retargeting and reviews. People search “emergency plumber near me” or “dentist open saturday” and call within minutes.
- B2B and professional services: Search for high-intent terms such as “outsourced bookkeeping for small business”, LinkedIn to reach people by role, and content plus email to carry long sales cycles. See my lead generation services for how I qualify those leads.
- E-commerce: Shopping and Performance Max for product searches, Meta and TikTok to create demand, and email flows for repeat purchases.
- New products nobody searches for yet: paid social and short video first, with social media marketing carrying the organic side, then search once people start looking you up by name.

How much should a US business budget for digital marketing services?
You are paying for three things: media (the money that goes to Google, Meta and others), the people or provider who run it, and tools. Each needs its own line in the plan.
What share of revenue do US companies spend on marketing?
Gartner’s 2026 CMO Spend Survey found marketing budgets averaged 7.8% of company revenue, up from 7.7% in 2025, with an average 15.3% of marketing budgets going to AI (Gartner). Most of the 401 leaders surveyed work at companies with more than $1 billion in revenue, so a 20-person business shouldn’t copy the figure. Use the goal-based method above, and treat any “percent of revenue” rule only as a sense check.
How should you split a budget between channels?
I don’t use a fixed formula, and I’d be wary of anyone who does. The order I follow:
- Fund the foundation first: tracking, a fast landing page and CRM follow-up.
- Put most of the media into the channel closest to the sale. Usually search for existing demand, or social when nobody searches for your product yet.
- Keep a smaller test budget for the next channel, and move money monthly toward whatever beats the target.
If you have no history, use Keyword Planner forecasts and the benchmarks above for a four to six week test, then recalculate with your own numbers.
How are digital marketing services priced in the US?
I haven’t found a trustworthy published source for typical US fees across full digital marketing services; ranges online vary so widely that they mislead more than they help. What I can explain is the pricing models you’ll see in proposals and what each one rewards.
| Pricing model | How it works | Works well when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Fixed fee for a defined scope | Ongoing work across several channels | Vague scope; ask what happens each week |
| Percentage of ad spend | Fee rises with media budget | Large paid budgets | Rewards spending more, not earning more |
| Project fee | One price for one deliverable | Audits, tracking setup, funnel builds | Who maintains it after launch |
| Performance-based | Paid per lead, sale or revenue share | Clear, verifiable outcomes | Loose “lead” definitions; provider keeps your accounts |
For paid search on its own, Search Engine Journal quotes typical US models such as a flat $500 to $2,500 a month plus 5% to 15% of spend, or flat rates of $2,500 to $10,000 a month (Search Engine Journal). The right question is never “what is the fee?” but “what will this fee save or earn me?”
Consultant, agency or in-house: who should deliver your digital marketing services?
All three can work, depending on your budget and whether you already have people who can execute.
| Factor | Consultant | Agency | In-house team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who makes decisions | A senior specialist, directly | A strategist, with account managers day to day | Your own staff |
| Breadth of skills | Strategy plus hands-on work, specialists brought in | Wide: design, video, media, SEO | Limited to who you hire |
| Cost structure | Retainer, project or advisory fee | Retainer, % of spend or project fees | Salaries, benefits, tools, training |
| Best for | Strategy, diagnosis, turnarounds, lean teams | High volume of creative and campaigns | Larger firms with steady, ongoing work |
How much does an in-house marketing team cost in the US?
More than most owners expect. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for marketing managers at $166,790 and for advertising and promotions managers at $133,660 in May 2025 (BLS). That is wages only, before benefits, software and training, and no single hire is strong across strategy, paid search, paid social, SEO, CRO and email. A setup that often works well: an in-house marketer for daily execution, plus a consultant who owns the strategy, audits the numbers and coaches the team.
How do you choose a digital marketing services provider?
Ask these before you sign anything:
- Who will work on my account each week? The person who pitched you, or someone you haven’t met?
- What will you measure? If the answer is traffic, rankings or reach, keep looking.
- Who owns the accounts and data? You should, with admin rights, from day one.
- What happens in the first 30 days? A good answer includes an audit and tracking fixes before new spend.
Can AI tools replace a digital marketing service?
No, but they change how the work gets done. I use AI daily to draft ad variations, summarize search terms and speed up reports. In a Harvard Business School and BCG study of 758 consultants, those using GPT-4 finished 12.2% more tasks and worked 25.1% faster on tasks inside the tool’s abilities, but were 19% less likely to reach the right answer on a task just outside them (The Harvard Crimson). AI is a useful assistant. Someone experienced still has to know your margins, read the sales calls and take responsibility for the budget.
Which US rules should your provider build into the setup?
There is no single federal privacy law for marketing in the US, so a serious service handles a patchwork. This isn’t legal advice, and your attorney should approve your policies, but these belong in the setup from day one:
- State privacy laws. Twenty states now have comprehensive privacy laws, with Indiana, Kentucky and Rhode Island taking effect on January 1, 2026 (MultiState). California’s Attorney General says covered businesses must treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a valid opt-out of sale or sharing (California Attorney General), and Google applies restricted data processing for users in applicable states (Google Ads Help).
- CAN-SPAM for email. Honest sender and subject lines, a valid postal address, opt-outs honored within 10 business days, no exception for B2B email, and penalties of up to $53,088 per violating email (FTC).
- Reviews and testimonials. The FTC’s August 2024 final rule bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, paying for reviews with a required sentiment, undisclosed insider reviews and buying fake followers (FTC).
What are the most common digital marketing mistakes US businesses make?
Most of the waste I find in audits has nothing to do with budget size.
Why are my marketing reports green but sales flat?
Because each vendor measures its own channel with its own definition of success. Rankings go up, reach goes up, form fills go up (spam included), and nobody owns the total.
Fix: one tracking setup, one monthly report and one person accountable for cost per customer across every channel.Choosing channels by cost per lead instead of cost per customer
Cheap leads that never answer the phone are expensive. Owners move budget to the channel with the lowest cost per lead and watch revenue fall.
Fix: feed sales data from your CRM back into reporting and judge every channel on cost per closed customer. Is a cheap all-in-one digital marketing package worth it?
Rarely. SEO, posting, ads and email for one low fee usually means templated work, with each channel getting a few hours a month.
Fix: pay for fewer channels done properly, with a written scope that lists what happens each week.Letting a provider own your ad accounts and data
When you leave, you lose years of conversion history, audiences and reports. Some businesses discover their ad account, analytics and even their domain are in the provider’s name.
Fix: create every account under your own business, keep admin rights and give the provider user access.Running one national campaign for a 50-state market
Costs, competition, licensing and language differ by state and metro. A single campaign spends the most where clicks are most expensive, not where customers are most profitable.
Fix: split campaigns by state or metro where costs or rules differ, and test Spanish campaigns with Spanish landing pages where your customers need them. How I deliver digital marketing services for US businesses

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between digital marketing services and a digital marketing agency?
Digital marketing services describe the work: strategy, ads, SEO, content, email, CRO and analytics. An agency is one way to buy it. You can also get it from an independent consultant, an in-house team or a mix of the three.
How much should a small US business spend on digital marketing?
There is no fixed figure. Gartner’s 2026 survey found marketing budgets averaged 7.8% of revenue, mostly at large companies. A more practical method is to multiply the customers you need by what you can afford to pay for each one, then test whether your channels can deliver at that cost.
Do I need SEO if I already run Google Ads?
Usually yes. Ads stop the moment you stop paying, while SEO builds traffic without a cost per click. With AI summaries reducing clicks on some searches, good SEO now also means being a source AI answers cite.
Can a remote consultant run digital marketing for a US business?
Yes. Ad accounts, analytics, CRM and reporting all work online. What matters is calls in your time zone, reporting in USD, full access for you and a consultant who researches your local market before spending.
Should I sign a long contract for digital marketing services?
Be careful with long lock-ins before you have seen results. Ask for a written scope, clear targets, a reasonable notice period and confirmation that you own every account and all data.
